One Less Gun: Suspect in Custody After Foot Pursuit Leads to the Recovery of Loaded Firearm in Mattapan


At about 1:50 AM on Sunday, February 4, 2018, officers assigned to District B-3 (Mattapan) made an onsite firearm arrest in the area of 500 River Street in Mattapan. The officers were on directed patrol when they observed the suspect, later identified as James McCluney, 37, of Mattapan, behaving in a suspicious manner while looking into several parked motor vehicles in the area of 478 River Street. When the officers approached to speak with the suspect, he immediately fled on foot towards Blue Hill Avenue while clutching at the waistband area of his pants. The officers pursued the suspect and were attempting to place him in custody when the suspect admitted he was in possession of an illegal firearm. Additional units quickly arrived on scene at which time the suspect was placed in custody without further incident. Officers were then able to safely recover a loaded .25 caliber Phoenix Arms handgun from inside the suspect’s front pants pocket. The suspect will appear in Dorchester District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm and Armed Career Criminal.
