One Less Gun: Suspect in Custody and Loaded Firearm Recovered After Armed Robbery at Convenience Store in Jamaica Plain

At about 12:06 PM on Saturday, December 30, 2017, officers assigned to District E-13 (Jamaica Plain) made an onsite arrest after responding to a call for an armed robbery at the JP Convenience Store located at 36 Gay Head Street in Jamaica Plain. During the incident, a male suspect, later identified as Saquan Hines, 21, of Norwood, entered the store and pointed a firearm at the clerk while demanding cash from the register before fleeing the store on foot. While on approach, responding officers observed an individual matching the suspect description and stopped him in the area of 59 Creighton Street. Officers performed a pat frisk of the male subject but no firearm was discovered. Officers did however observe numerous denominations of U.S. Currency which were crumpled up and sticking out of the suspect’s left front pants pocket. During the course of their investigation, officers reviewed security video of the incident which clearly showed the suspect holding a black and silver firearm in his right hand during the robbery while stuffing cash into his left side pocket. BPD K-9 ‘Rocky’ and his handler quickly responded to the scene to search for the missing firearm. Rocky was able to track the suspect's path of flight and soon located a loaded .45 caliber Ruger P345 handgun which had been hidden under a barrel in the area of 22 Edge Hill Street along with other evidence directly connected to the suspect. The suspect was positively identified and placed in custody without incident.

The suspect, Saquan Hines, will appear in Roxbury District Court on multiple charges including Armed Robbery, Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon, Intent to Rob While Armed, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.
