At about 5:57 PM on Friday, December 22, 2017, officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) conducted a stop of a motor vehicle when they observed it travelling on a public way with an expired out-off-state registration plate in the area of Talbot Ave and Millet Street. As a result of the stop, officers confirmed that the registration was in fact expired and also observed that one of the four occupants was not wearing his seat belt. A check of the occupant’s identity revealed that he had several charges of Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon on his record. That information, combined with the officers’ knowledge of recent firearm and gang related incidents in the area, led officers to pat frisk the occupants of the vehicle. A pat frisk of one of the backseat passengers, identified as 27-year-old Jabari Ward of Brockton, led officers to recover a loaded a black Delta Elite Colt semi-automatic firearm from Ward’s pants. Further investigation of the firearm’s serial number revealed that the firearm had been reported stolen out of Bridgewater in 2015. Officers arrested Ward and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm, and Receiving Stolen Property. The operator was issued a citation for Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle and a Safety Belt violation, and the vehicle was towed.
