One Less Gun: Officers Recover Two Illegal Firearms during Traffic Stop in Dorchester; Operator Arrested for Gun, Drug Charges and OUI

At about 1:25 AM on Thursday, November 16, 2017, officers from District B-2 (Roxbury) conducted a stop of a motor vehicle for running a red light in the area of 200 Columbia Road in Dorchester.

Upon approaching the car, officers observed the operator move a backpack from the passenger’s seat and throw it into the backseat. Officers also observed several open containers of alcohol in the center console. When officers made contact with the operator, who identified himself as 22-year-old Jared Coombs of Dorchester, they observed that his eyes were red and glossy, his speech was slurred, and his breath smelled of alcoholic beverages. The officers determined that Coombs appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and ordered him to exit the vehicle. When Coombs refused, the officer opened the passenger side door and removed the keys from the ignition. It was at this time that the officer observed a firearm in plain view in the console of the driver’s side door. The officers were able to quickly remove Coombs from the vehicle without further incident. The loaded Ruger .22 caliber revolver was recovered by the officers.

Coombs could not produce a license to carry, therefore, officers arrested him and transported back to District B-2 where they conducted field sobriety tests. As a result of the investigation, officers determined that Coombs was operating under the influence of alcoholic beverages.

An inventory search of Coombs’s vehicle revealed seven large bags of a substance believed to be marijuana inside the backpack that Coombs had thrown in the backseat. Officers also recovered a loaded Hi-Point Model c9 9mm handgun from inside the backpack. In addition, officers recovered two more large bags of marijuana, over $200 in US currency, and packaging items consistent with the illegal sale of narcotics from inside the passenger compartment.

Coombs was charged with Operating under the Influence of Alcohol, Possession with Intent to Distribute Class D Drugs, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (2 counts), Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm.
