One Less Gun: Loaded Firearm Recovered from Known Suspect After Foot Pursuit in Dorchester

At about 12:50 PM on Monday, October 2, 2017, officers assigned to the Youth Violence Strike Force made an onsite firearm arrest in the area of Normandy Street and Supple Road in Dorchester. Officers were on patrol in the area when they observed, William Howell, 25, of Dorchester, who was known to them due to previous interactions, walking inside the fenced in area near 11 Castlegate Road. Upon seeing the officers driving by, the suspect immediately took off running while clutching at the front right pocket of his sweatshirt. Believing that the suspect was armed, the officers pursued the suspect on foot, finally catching up to the suspect when he lost his footing and stumbled. When the officers went to perform a pat frisk of the suspect, a violent struggle ensued. As the officers attempted to remove the suspect’s hand from inside his sweatshirt pocket, they could feel him gripping a firearm. Officers were eventually able to gain control of the struggling suspect at which time they safely recovered a loaded .380 caliber Taurus Model PT138 handgun. The suspect will appear in Dorchester District Court on multiple charges including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (2nd and Subsequent), Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Carrying a Loaded Firearm on a Public Way, Resisting Arrest and Trespassing.
