At about 1:55 PM on Thursday, October 12, 2017, officers from District A-1 (Downtown) were on directed patrol in the area of 35 Temple Place due to numerous complaints of quality of life issues on Temple and surrounding streets. Officers had taken up a position of surveillance in the area and shortly observed what they believed to be, from their training and experience, a hand-to-hand drug transaction between four males during which one of the males (later identified as 24-year-old Edwin N. Guity of Dorchester) placed an item in his pocket. Officers observed the other three men walk away while Guity remained at the scene, therefore officers attempted to initiate an inquiry. Officers were able to stop Guity and a second male (identified as 23-year-old Karmau Cotton-Landers of Dorchester). Officers observed the top of a glassine bag in Guity’s front pocket that was later determined to contain marijuana. During a pat frisk of both males, officers recovered a spring-loaded knife on Cotton-Landers and a loaded .38 Special revolver from Guity. Officers arrested Cotton-Landers and charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Dangerous Weapon. Guity was arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Unlawfully Carrying a Loaded Firearm.
